Don’t let the title fool you; no suburbanites were tortured in the recording of this demo. Al was riding on the train to NYC one afternoon when he heard some spoiled teens complaining about how "tough life is." This song was the result, written on that train ride. The tune has a calypso ⁄ pop type of a feel and features Al on all the instruments and vocals.

Al’s dad Al Quagliata Sr. (aka Al Nichols) was a jazz bassist and Al has been playing jazz guitar since the age of 17. This tune was written by Al while sitting in front of the television watching George Bush Sr. being inaugurated back in 1989, hence the title. Originally just an instrumental, Al decided later to add lyrics. Featured here is the original instrumental demo version with Al on guitar and Rob Kaplan on the Fender Rhodes Organ.

Al grew up in an Italian ⁄ American household and in addition to all the jazz that was played, he got to hear a great deal of Italian folk music. This is a fun novelty number, a tribute to this type of music, which Al used to perform in his night club act. This demo version features Al on all instruments and vocals.

This song was originally written when Al was the musical director of a children’s theater group. He sent it to a BMI songwriting contest and received a letter saying that while the contest was not taking children’s songs they thought it was one of the best they ever heard. This demo version features Al on all instruments and vocals.
